27 June, 2012, after seeing Peaches on petfinder.com, I sent an email to Janet, Union County Humane Society to see if they would allow me to adopt Peaches and bring her to Nova Scotia. She said yes and I was so excited. It was hard to believe that Peaches was still available after being in the shelter almost a month before I emailed them about her and hard to believe they would allow her to come to NS.

1 July, 2012, Peaches was given Heartguard  and Panacur (parasites)

16 Jul 2012, $130.81 sent US money order to Humane Society for adoption of Peaches.
17 Jul 2012, I sent the $15 US money order for Peaches Health Certificate. Little did I know then it was only the interstate Health Certificate and not the international one that was needed for Peaches to cross the border.

I had trouble arranging transportation, Tammy didn't want her to go using volunteer transportation and I tried Peterson's Transportation the one they use and they leave Tenn on a Friday but don't have a license to go into Maine. Then Thanks to Sandra, who suggested I try Don's transportation and he went into Maine but only into Tenn every other week and this was the off week.

18th Jul, 2012, Janet sent an email saying they were concerned that getting transportation set up was taking too long and emailed me to say that they had another application for Peaches. I was horrified because I was afraid that they would let her go to someone locally.

25 July, 2012, finally it was time for Don to pick her up but about an hour before Tammy called and said that she didn't have the international paperwork. She called Don and cancelled the transportation. I had Dot all lined up to meet him on Thurs nite at Calais Maine and bring Peaches across the border. I had my ferry reservation booked for Friday 27 Jul, 2012, exactly a month since I had first emailed about Peaches, I was suppose to leave Digby at 8 and arriving Saint John at 11 to meet Dot with Peaches and back to Digby leaving at noon and home by about 4:30. Then everything was cancelled. I was horrified, I thought I would never see Peaches. I kept calling Tammy to see if she had received the paperwork from Nashville and she didn't. Finally I found one on line that she could download and she did and had it signed by the vet. Now we were on the off week again with Don's transport so another week to wait.

1 August, 2012, Heartguard.

There were many emails back and forth about other ways of transportation. PilotsNPaws was contacted and a trip for her planned as far as Bangor and Dot was going to pick her up there on Sunday afternoon. Then Tammy said they didn't have room for her.

I also contacted Craig of Happy Dog Transportation. He leaves on Monday and arrives Thursday morning, Calais. Same price as Don's only wouldn't be good for Dot.

Peaches was micro chipped #0A107D565A. Date of birth, 8 Aug 2009. Three years old.

Peaches arrived at the Union County Humane Society Shelter, Maynardville, Tennassee, USA,  31 My 2012 and  left the Union County Humane Society Shelter, Wednesday, 8 August, 2012, 8am by Don Seeley's Animals Transport, Animals on Board.http://www.animalsonboard.com/

Peaches was due to arrive at Calais, Maine, around 1am, Friday 10 Aug, 2012 but was about 2 hours late in arriving. Dot picked her up, paid the $400 US for transportation and then drove to the Canadian border around 3am and was held up there for over an hour because there was no receipt or bill of sale to prove that I had paid $125 for her. Finally after emailing a copy of the money order and a copy of an email the customs officer agreed to let them go through into Canada. Paid $16.16 for Customs. Dot arrived home very late just in time to get ready to go to work.

Dot dropped Peaches off at a friend's day care for the day, Fundy Trails and picked her up after work and drove to meet me at the Saint John, NB ferry at 7.
Paid $20 for boarding kenneI.  I crossed the ferry from Digby at 4. Tracy had agreed to check in on the 3 at home around 7-8.

I first saw Peaches in the arms of Dot at the door of the Saint John ferry terminal at 7pm . She was being patted by some kids and seemed to be enjoying herself.
We took Peaches for a walk in the grassy area outside the terminal which was obviously used by other dogs before and after their ferry experience.
44 days after applying for Peaches the end of June, I was finally holding her in my arms on my lap in Dot's car. Paid Dot $600 to cover transportation, customs, boarding for 1 day and any other expenses that Dot encountered such as gas, etc.

Peaches had a purple collar on with the name "Peaches" printed out and taped on it.
I brought a new red harness and one of the leashes with me so when we got in Dot's car we changed over to the harness and Dot said she could use the collar so we were happy to see it go to a good home.
Dot took us for a tour of the city, it had been a long time since I had been to Saint John, many nice improvement to the waterfront area.
We stopped at Reversing Falls and ate our lunch in the car. Peaches ate her chicken and carrots in three different intervals and didn't finish all of it. She drank some water I had brought from home.

Then it was time to go back to the ferry terminal and for Dot to start her drive home.
At ten pm we said our good-byes and had a walk around the doggie park again and into the terminal to check in and get our boarding pass for our trip to NS on the ferry.
I carried Peaches on board in the large carry bag I had taken the lunch over in and we found a secluded spot to sit. For the first couple of minutes Peaches was restless and wanted to get on the floor. I could see that the carpet hadn't been vacuumed lately so I didn't want her on the floor and I also thought she might be more visible by being there as well. I didn't want her to have to travel down in the car area in a kennel.
She finally fell asleep and we left the Saint John harbour headed for NS and home. I fell asleep a few times for a few minutes at a time. Soon we were docking and anxiously waited at the ramp to be allowed to depart the ship. Peaches wagging her tail the whole time at the strangers.

Sat 11 Aug, 2:30 am, when we finally set foot on NS it had just begun to rain. After a couple of quick pees, we went to the waiting car and into the doggie crate and were on our way at 2:20.
The rain didn't amount to much as we drove along our hours journey to Kingston. Arriving home we had a quick jaunt down the street for a few pees and into the house to meet the new sisters. $57 for return trip ferry.
I took the other three girls out and we headed for bed at 4am Sat morning.
Peaches is a wonderful little girl full of love and kisses.

Up again at a little after 7 and down the road to explore the new surroundings. We met a neighbour and his very large dog and all she did was wag her tail, no barking.
Breakfast in her new home.
After realizing Peaches had picked up fleas somewhere along her journey I quickly gave her a bath which she enjoyed but not so much the dryer. It is obvious she has never seen a blow dryer.
Now her coat is shiny and silky.
She immediately ran to the kitchen door to go out. She is so full of energy now that she has had her bath.
She plays with toys, loves to play soccer with a ball and chews her chewy. She is not afraid of the other dogs but commands a presence that keeps them away from her without any barking necessary.
She has made friends with my neighbour's already. She loves people.
I held her upside down in my arms like a baby and rocked her in the rocking chair and she fell asleep.

She doesn't mind it if I wipe the tears off her face. Her left ear is more waxy than it should be and reminds me of how Sugar's always was.
Appointment to see vet Monday aft. Dr Bruce thinks Peaches is around 4 yrs old.  Eye drops,
Fucithalmic and ears drops, Surolan. Having a lot of trouble getting the drops in her ears and her eyes. Most of it goes elsewhere.

She enjoys sleeping in the clothes closet at night where I have a big cushion with a nice soft blanket on it. She has carried a few toys in there as well. She also likes to guard chewy toys. Not so much chew on them, although she did get one of the small flat ones caught in her mouth and so I had to give her a bigger one and then got the ones with the knot on either end of them. Shirley and Trixie chew better on chewies. She is starting to bark when other dogs bark while she is on the deck. She also chases cars, buses, motorcycles so I got a Petsafe   to see if that will stop her from chasing. I think it is the noise they make.

24 Sep 2012, 7 mths  to the day we buried Sugar:  I was taking a few things out to the line this morning and Peaches got through the door between my leg and ran away from me. I tried calling her but she kept running down our street. She went in to neighbour's but heard a car and then chased it down one of the Old Brook, she ran through the back yards and out a driveway again when she heard another car. I thought he would get hit by a car on main street but she turned and went on the sidewalk. She was nearly to Kingswood Lane when a kind woman got out of a car and went over to her and she stopped.  All this time I was running after her I was in my slippers.

Peaches chases cars, trying the ultrasonic device on her doesn't seems to work. Can Tire, $57.49 but it does work on Lola to stop her from barking at dogs on the street. Lola is very nervous of noise. So I still need to find something to help me stop Peaches from chasing cars, especially trucks and motorcycles, school buses.

28 Sep, 2012, just discovered that Peaches has tape worm, called Berwick vet for pill. Dolpac, 1 tablet, $8. Gave it to her at 7:30 pm. Seems better this morning. 29 Sep. I have seen no further evidence of rice bits clinging to fur on the back end of her.

Peaches makes friends with everyone she meets. everyone loves her back.

Peaches loves to sit in chairs.

23 Oct 2012, scheduled to have her teeth cleaned. She lost one tooth, I had noticed there was one small one behind one in the front on the bottom. This was loose so they took it out. She had blood work done and they were excellent. The vet checked her ears and they were good but her eyes are watery but healthy. When I went to pick her up she was coughing. She continued to cough and gag so on 26th took her in to see vet, it wasn't Dr Bruce, she said there was likely irritation due to the tube, they try to get it tight fitting so nothing gets into the lungs. There was no fever, so she got 14 Clavamox tablets, take 2 a day and Metacam for 3 days.
31 Oct she was still coughing first thing in the morning. I called and spoke to Dr Bruce, he said he would make a note of it on her charts.

Nov,  I noticed chaffing under her 2 front arms so I changed her red harness to large black one that Lola had been wearing and gave Lola her old one back. Gave the smaller red one from Peaches to Trixie, she had been wearing the one she had chewed twice. She is shedding a lot and she also needs to have her gland done at least once a week. I noticed the bottom eye lids in the corners have lots of hairs sticking into her eyes. I am using the eye gel that I got for Sugar to keep this area lubricated so not to damage the eye. Dr Bruce mentioned the eye specialist in Moncton. She is so good to let me trim the hairs in the corners of her eyes. I use the blunt scissors but could do a better job if they were finer and I could get closer to the bottoms eye lids without fear of cutting the skin on them.

Dec, Peaches featured in Union County newsletter. They mention how long it took to arrange her transportation to NS and used the picture of her on the deck enjoying a relaxing moment.
20 Dec noticed more rice like particles on the her back fur. Got more dolpac 10 pill to give to her on empty stomach so gave it after night of not eating and no breakfast. 22 Dec noticed the dead worm, 23 Dec noticed dead worm. Hope we got it this time. Do not like giving her all these chemicals. She seems to have stopped shedding. Thank goodness, the weather is cold now and snowy and she needs all her fur to keep her warm.

Merry Christmas from Peaches

Peaches donated $50 to the shelter for the dogs in the shelter over Christmas.

Peaches heath is improving, her eyes are much darker in colour, a real dark brown, when she arrived they were a light blonde colour. Her skin is loose, it was very tight before and the front chest bone was very pointed and now seems to have rounded out. Her coat is growing but very slowly, but you can see the long guard hairs so there is hope. On cold days she wears her red sweater. It use to be Lola's but Lola doesn't like it and Peaches does.

Peaches likes my gf bread spread with peanut butter and they all like the pumpkin cookies I made.

She still wants to chase cars, and she also likes to sit in the living room chair and watches for cars and barks when she sees them. She is very protective of her things. Sometimes she sleeps overnight in her chair.

18 Feb 2013, Peaches has to be corrected when we walk, I usually use the noise control with negative and positve buttons. She chases school buses, snow plows, garbage trucks, trucks and cars that make noises, especially in slush or on gravel. She also barks when on the deck when she sees the vehicles go by on Balser or hears them on highway 101. If I use the noise control when she is on the deck and within range of Lola then Lola is very upset. I had to stop allowing her to sit  in the livingroom in a chair looking  out the windows, she constantly was jumping  down going to the window and barking at whatever she say on the street. She now has to stay in the computer room with the rest of us. She sleeps on the floor on a blanket and it is much better for everyone. Especially Trixie who barks everytime Peaches barked. If she wears the collar she is good.

This is a major problem, if she ever gets away again, she will chase a car and likely be killed.

Peaches Feb 2013

Peaches modeling her new short shorts.

When Peaches is feeling happy she rolls on her back and kicks her legs around. She also rubs her head along the side of the kitchen cupboards. Now she has realized that I think that this is cute and she does it longer.

1 May, new pink step in harness that I ordered for Peaches arrived from California, Earth Soy, made from soy and natural dyes. Seems to fit her perfectly, nice color and soft but made in China. I  had originally bought her one from Pet Value but it had refector tape on it and when you made it smaller to fit her the tape  moved to the inside and rubbed on her body. They couldn't get this Earth Soy harness so had to order it on line and paying for shipping which doubled the price of  it.

May, 2013, New bed from Winners, New Minas, it is square, the same color that she is and very soft and cosy. Sometimes Lola sleeps in it and she doesn't seem to mind.

29 Jun, 13, Sat morning, I went to dog show in Canning to see Mildred and her Pekes, returning home I stopped at Scotian Gold and bought a squeekie toy in the shape of a small ball. Thought Trixie would like it but Peaches loves it. She bats it around, chases it when I toss it down the hall, chews on it and obviously it is her fav thing. Bought her Pet Greens Dog Jerky – Roasted Chicken Recipe from Winners, she loves them, can't get them at Pet Value only Global in the city.
