Lola

LOLA
In the winter of 2004, I felt it was time for Sugar who had been with me for 3 years, to have someone to play with. My Mom's dog had died and the new one she adopted wasn't the playful type.  I contacted the same lady who had found me Sugar and she found Lola for us.This is Lola taken in the US before she came to live with us in NS.

Lola had been picked up as a stray and was in a high kill pound in Rutherfordton, North Carolina but was rescued by Denise who took her into her foster home. Lola had her Rabies vaccination 6 Dec 2004. It was merial , SQ, killed. Tri City Animal Clinic, Forest City, NC. Lolas agreement of adoption was made 9 Dec, 2004. $175 was paid to Howlin4Spirit Companion Dog Rescue of Rutherfordton, NC. She was spayed 12 Dec, 2004. She was also given distemper and parvo vaccinations. 29 Dec 2004, Lola was given a clean bill of health and certificate from NC Dept Health to cross the border into Canada. Again not signed by the USDA. It was thought she was around 2 yrs old at that time.  30 Dec she started on her trip to NS and arrived 2 January 2005.  I think she was around a year old.

This is Lola as she traveled along to NS

Lola like Sugar traveled via the doggie transportation system to NB where a kind lady known as Dot brought her across the ferry from Saint John to Digby where we waited for her. At first her new sister Sugar did not take to her but after the car ride home, which Lola sat looking out the back window the entire trip, they settled their differences outside the house and went in the house and were best of friends from then on.

Lola like Sugar can run around the house like a crazy dog unless you call her name to get her to stop. It is almost like she is over excited. She also has spells when her jaw clamps shut and I need to force my fingers between her teeth to get her to release and open her mouth again or hold her against me and give a quick compression to her side. A couple of years ago she kicked out her fur on both sides of her neck. It took almost two years for it to grow back in again. She also gags when she drinks water, not all the time but sometimes.
Dec 2008, Lola and Sugar
Apr 2012, Lola and Shirley

Lola is a very friendly girl, she loves people but she is not one to have her head patted or be picked up and cuddled.  Her fav toy is an old sock, she loves to try to pull it away from you. When she does she shakes and shakes it.. She has taught Shirley to hold on the other end of the sock and tug it. So smart and so cute of both of them.

Lola turned out to be another great walker and we would go to the national park and we enjoyed many winter strolls together.

She doesn't like to wear her sweater and she is terrified of being on her back.

In Jun 2005, we moved to live next door to her Grammy. This is Lola on the deck of her new house.

Unfortunately while out for a walk she has to stop and sniff every blade of grass or every twig along the way so it becomes more of a sniff than a walk and takes considerable time to do the route. She use to walk the half hour walk, then when Sugar became ill and we started using the stroller, we would only walk the 15 min walk and now that Sugar is gone, she only walks a 10 min walk.  She is also a very picky eater and doesn't like rice or lentils but will eat meat and carrots. Lola loves plain microwave popcorn. She is very good to come to you when you call her name.

Lola is not a very cuddly girl when you hold her or pick her up she goes stiff. Her long legs just hang down and she doesn't relax or put her head next to you to get in close to cuddle.

Kingston, July 2006

When she first meets other dogs she tends to drool a lot. She also has dogs that she doesn't like and brakes and pulls to try to get to them. Now she has Shirley doing the same thing.

23 Feb 2012, her best friend Sugar Plum died. We never ate or slept for 3 days and we are so sad that we will never recover from our loss.  We were the 3 Musketeers.

17 Apr 2012, a new friend for Lola arrived, Shirley, a small female Pekingese from a Quebecpuppy mill and fostered in Napean, Ontario. Lola was very good to accept her into the house but is needing some special attention to assure her that she is still loved.
20 Apr 2012

Lola and Shirley play very well together but Lola tires out a lot more quickly. Shirley has picked up all of Lola's bad habits such as licking, shaking her body and scratching her ears. None of these were picked up from Sugar, they are totally Lola's. Lola never picked up anything from Sugar.

12 May, 2012, We now have a black female Pom called Trixie who is very noisy. She plays with Shirley a bit so Lola can rest.
25 May 2012, Worm med, Strongid, for all 3 Lola, Shirley and Trixie
Lola on Deck, May 2012

18 Jun, 2012, Annual visit to vets in Berwick, Lola has cataracts and after bloodwork, high levels of creatinine. This usually means that your kidneys are not working properly. She weighed 16 pounds. $119.60
Gave Lola a Vit E capsule.
20 Jun, gave Lola a Wild salmon oil capsule. 27 Jun, gave Lola a Vit E capsule with peanut butter.

White rice and apples recommended as part of diet. Avoid dairy and salt.

I am continuing to give Lola Vit A, C, E, wild salmon oil, olive oil, & peanut butter. She is not a huge fan of rice, will only eat it when drizzled with olive oil. She is getting more carrots and sweet potato as well.

A good friend of mine Dot in NB who brought Sugar and Lola to me from the US told me about Occu glow for dogs with cataracts.

Lola 2012
When we are walking, Peaches chases at cars, trying the ultrasonic device on her doesn't seems to work. Can Tire, $57.49 but it does work on Lola to stop her from barking at dogs on the street. Lola is very nervous of noise so it is worth the money if it helps make Lola a better dog.  Unfortunately Lola is very slow walker because she has to sniff every inch of the way.
